Determining Wheel Fit And Offset For Greater Clearance On Inside Of Trailer To Sidewall

Question:

I am replacing a set of trailer tires/wheels on a very old utility trailer. It currently uses 6.5 x 16 tires on 6 x 5.5 wheels. the suspension system doesnt leave much space on the inside. How can I get an accurate measurement on a replacement tire wheel setup to insure I have clearance on the inside. I already figured I would swap to modern 15inch to get the same height. My current setup is 4inch from backside of tire sidewall to mounting flange with about 3/4inch clearance.

Wheel offset refers to the location of a wheel's rim in relation to the wheel's center. The rim can be centered on the wheel or it can be offset to either side. The position of the rim determines where the tire lines up - either closer to or farther from the vehicle or trailer on which it is mounted.

Trailer wheels usually have zero offset, meaning that the rim of a trailer wheel lines up directly under the center of the wheel. This alignment puts the tire directly under the center of the wheel, giving the wheel and tire combination the greatest ability to handle load.

To determine if your trailer wheels have an offset, remove a wheel from your trailer and measure from the mounting surface of the wheel (where the wheel mounts to the hub) to the inside and outside beads. The difference between these two measurements is the offset.

In the 15 inch, we currently don't have any offset wheels. In the 16 inch we have one that will offset -8mm which will move the tire away from the frame and it is Aluminum HWT Hi-Spec Series 03 Mod Trailer Wheel w/-8mm Offset - 16" x 7" Rim - 6 on 5-1/2, # AM22657. This does have a wider wheel than yours, so it may actually move the trailer closer.

The Provider ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Mod Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range D, # TA24VR is a thinner wheel with zero offset, so it will give you a little more clearance on the inside as you referenced.
