The instructions for the Kat's Engine Oil Dipstick Heater # KH15200 say that the heater needs to be submerged in at least 5 inches of oil for it to work properly. Since there aren't any shorter dipstick heaters if there is some extra slack sticking out, it will still work just fine. If you cut the dipstick heater it will not work properly.
