For your 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, I recommend we start with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 56094. This will simply connect to the factory plugs behind each of your tail lights. It is recommended to use a small amount of dielectric grease like # 11755.
If your trailer doesn't have brakes, you will just need a 7 way connector like the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector # 30717 and a mounting bracket like # 18138.
If you want all the 7 way connection pins to function for another trailer application, then you will want the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This will give you the 7-way connection you desire by using the 4 way flat connection and adding the 12V power, the reverse function, and the electric brake controller output. This kit comes with the wire, connectors, and circuit breakers needed. I've attached a video of this installation for you. With trailer brakes you will also need a brake controller, and for that I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will give you the same braking pressure at your trailer as you give to the pedal in your Equinox. This controller has a very nice LCD display that allows you to know what is going on with the constant diagnostics the controller runs. This also takes the code deciphering of many brake controllers out of the equation for troubleshooting and connectivity.
I've attached and article on ball mounts in case you need one for this new application to tow level.
