You are absolutely right that there are seemingly endless options in a trailer brake controller, but the ones that are simplest to install, that work best and that have proven their long-term reliability are fewer in number.
I suggest you use one of the Tekonsha Prodigy proportional-type brake controllers that slow the trailer right along with the Suburban's rate of deceleration. These deliver smoother braking performance than time-delay type controllers. The linked brake controller article will further detail each type.
The Prodigy P2 # 90885 is an outstanding brake controller that is rated exceptionally highly by our many customers that use it. The P3 # 90195 offers the same internal functionality but adds a nicer display and the ability to store pre-set brake power settings, a handy feature for when you go from level roadways to long downhill grades.
To install either you will need our brake controller install kit # ETBC7 and your Suburban needs to have a 4-pole wiring harness in place. If you need one use # C55319.
I have linked for you a helpful article and video both covering installation of the ETBC7 installation kit.
