Recommended Parts to Flat Tow a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hard Rock Edition

Question:

I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hard Rock and need a tow bar. What weight do you recommend, 6,500? Blue Ox Alpha or Blue Ox Aladdin? What is the weight of each one? Coupler or Hitch style for ease of removal on unlevel ground?

Your 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited likely weighs approximatley 4,500 pounds. Even if you've made some modifications to increase that a 6,000 pound tow bar is going to be enough.

I personally like the Demco tow bars because of the independant arms that make it easier to hook up to the base plates on your Jeep. The Commander # DM9511012 is rated up to 6,000 pounds but if you'd like some wiggle room you can go with the Dominator # DM9511008 for 7,500 pounds or the Excali-Bar III # DM9511013 for 10,500 pounds. All of them also include the safety cables.

Most people prefer a tow bar that installs into the hitch receiver because it can be left installed and just folded up when you're not using it. A coupler style will be stored on the Jeep or removed completely and stored somewhere else which a lot of people don't like.

Base plate kit # DM9518320 fits your Hard Rock Edition and pairs up to the Demco tow bars.

To power your Jeep's lights while towing it you can use the Roadmaster Diode Kit # RM-15267. You'll also need a Brake Light Relay # RM-88400 to prevent the Jeep's brake signals from overriding the turn signals of your RV. I've attached install videos of both of these for you.

Most states require a supplemental braking system in vehicels being flat towed. The easiest system we carry to use is the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. The installation is more involved than some other systems but after that you just flip a switch when you're ready to tow.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter. This will keep your tow bar level with the connection on your Jeep. I've linked our selection so you can choose the correct adapter. There's also a help article to help you determine the correct rise or drop that you need. As well as some other articles that may be helpful to you.
