Do I Need Sway Control With My Weight Distribution System

Question:

I need a weight distributing hitch setup. Very confused on how many systems are out there, and what makes something better or worse. Tow Vehicle: 2001 GMC 2500HD Diesel 4x4 15.1k max towing capacity with WD hitch Trailer: 34foot enclosed car trailer 14k GVW 1400lb tongue weight Will be towing at or near maximum capacity What weight distributing hitch should I go with? And do I need sway control? If I do need/should use sway control, this is what is most important to me in order: 1 Ability to back up 2 Needs to be useable in tight turning situations 3 Ease of use Thanks for the help!

When it comes to picking the correct Weight Distribution (WD) system for your towing setup there are a lot of options out there. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are looking for a WD system is your Total Tongue Weight. Total tongue weight is measured by the tongue weight of your loaded trailer plus the weight of anything that is sitting behind the rear axle of your GMC. Once you narrow down the WD system by tongue weight, choosing one usually comes down to style preference. Some that are a little more pricey just have some extra features or are rated for a higher towing capacity.

If you are towing a trailer that has any significant amount of length, height, or weight, sway control is recommended. It helps to prevent your trailer from dragging to the left or right when gusts of wind comes along.

I have a Weight Distribution System for you that includes Sway Control, will allow you to back up, and will still allow you to take some tight turns at slower speeds. The Reese WD System # RP66130 is going to work best for what you are needing. It has a Gross Towing Weight of 15,000 lbs and a max Tongue Weight of 1,500 lbs. The only other things that you will need are a shank that will work with a WD system, if you know what kind of rise or drop you are needing I recommend one like the Reese # RP54970, and a hitch ball. The hitch ball shank needs to be 1-1/4 inches like the Curt # C40030. You just need to make sure that you pick the right ball diameter size.

I have attached some demonstration videos for you as well.
