Aluminum Ball Mount Selection For 2005 Jeep Liberty

Question:

Hello, I recently got a diesel Jeep Liberty and wanted a good 2x2 trailor hitch. I was trying to match my dads trailor hitch only in a different material his rusted. The only difference between the two is that his has a extra two inches from center of pin hole to center of ball hole.. My question is, what are the pros or cons about getting a trailor hitch that is two inches shorter? We usually hall hay in a long trailor. Thanks!

A difference in length of your hitch, or ball mount will effect the clearance from the trailer to the rear of your Jeep Liberty. What you would want to do is measure the clearance needed on your Jeep Liberty. To measure the clearance needed, you will want to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole out 8-1/4 Inches. This will be the location of your hitch ball. Then what you can do is move your trailer and position the coupler to that approximate location to see if there will be any issues of clearance. An issue I can foresee with a shorter hitch, or ball mount is that you will not be able to make as sharp of turns.

The recommended hitch or ball mount for your 2005 Jeep Liberty is Brophy Ball Mount, part # EA40, which measures 14-5/8" Inches from center of hitch pin hole to center of ball hole. Since part # DTBM4200 measures 8-1/4 Inches, you will want to measure from the center of your hitch pin hole out past the farthest point of the rear of your vehicle, the spare tire, or the rear bumper.

The item you selected, Aluminum Trailer Hitch Ball Mount, part # DTBM4200, would be a good option for a more weather-resistant ball mount, if you will have enough clearance. Part # DTBM4200, will fit a 2 Inch by 2 Inch Receiver Hitch. Make sure the capacity of the ball mount you choose exceeds the weight of the trailer and that the diameter of the mounting hole for the trailer ball matches the diameter of the ball shank of the trailer ball you will be using.

When choosing a ball mount, you always want to measure to determine the amount of rise or drop that you will need (see FAQ).

In addition to a ball mount, you will also need Pin and Clip, part # PC3. For added security, you could go with a locking pin and clip, Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # e98882.

I have linked an FAQ on ball mounts that you may find as a good reference.
