Rooftop Cargo Box Recommendations for 2017 Subaru Outback

Question:

Im currently trying to decide on cargo boxes for our 2017 outback that also has eyesight technology. Also, I wanted to be sensitive to how big we could go so we could balance being able to carry snowboards that are 150 cm long. Originally I was looking at the Thule Force or Yakima Skybox 16, but I was curious what benefits there really are or arent with going up to the Thule Sonic XL or Yakima Showcase 15. And if there are benefits with reduced noise, gas mileage, etc., which design brand is better to go with.

All rooftop cargo boxes will generate wind noise and to some degree all will negatively affect mileage but those with the more aerodynamic low-profile shape, will tend to be quieter and will have slightly less effect on fuel economy.

The Force XT # TH6356B is large enough for your snowboards (it can handle up to 175-cm boards)and at 32-lbs it is probably a better option. It will mount on round, square, aero, elliptical, and most factory crossbars that do not exceed 3-1/2-inches wide x 1-11/16-inches tall. The Yakima Skybox NX 16 # Y95AV fits the same bar types and will handle your snowboards but is 3/4-inches shorter, 16-lbs heavier but also slightly higher in cost. I'd go for the Yakima, all things considered.

Often rooftop cargo box users also select a step like the Camco # CAM43676. This inexpensive folding, lightweight aluminum step gives you about a foot of extra reach for loading and unloading your items and it stores easily.
