Recommended Trailer To Carry Beach Cruiser Bikes Behind 2013 Honda Accord

Question:

I am looking at tilting hitch bike racks to transport two beach cruiser bikes we currently only own one cruiser, but the plan is to get another. My son rides an adult tricycle that will only ride in the trunk... so we need access to the trunk. I thought I was going to be fine with a tilting hitch bike rack. The problem is that I drive a 2013 Honda Accord and it looks like it is limited to Class I. From what I can tell, that means I am limited to 70 lbs for carrying the beach cruisers. The beach cruiser my daughter rides is 45lbs. While I do not have a bike, I was planning to get a beach cruiser for myself as well. These bikes are generally pretty heavy...unless I am going to spend way more money. Given that the Honda is my only car, what is recommended for transporting these bikes? Is there a way to increase the weight capacity of a hitch bike rack? It looks like the hitch style racks are a significant investment and I need to be sure it will work before spending the money for the hitch and the rack. Thank you!

I did some research and found that the towing capacity for your Accord is 1,000-lbs and the tongue weight capacity is 100-lbs. We do not have a hitch mounted bike carrier that would allow you to carry the weight of two beach cruisers added to the weight of the bike carrier. I may have a solution for you though.

I recommend using a trailer like the yakima Rack Rack and Roll Trailer, part # Y08106. Although this is a more costly option, it would allow you to tow behind your Accord and carry up to 250-lbs of cargo like bikes, camping gear, or other items. With the 66-inch long crossbars you have a lot of room to be able to carry several items.

The bike carrier I recommend is the Rhino-Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack, part # RRRBC050-FB. This bike carrier can accommodate fat tires on a bike up to 5-inches wide. This rack comes with locks to secure the bike and carrier and deter theft. It uses a ratcheting padded arm that will hold the bike by the front wheel.

since the Rack And Roll trailer needs a 4-way trailer connector, if you do not have a trailer harness on your Accord I recommend part # 118596.
