For your 2011 BMW X3, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # C13316. This is a very nice trailer hitch with a bolt on installation and all the hardware included. This installation requires no drilling, but does require removal of bumper and trimming of underbody (not visible) panel.

We will also need a ballmount for towing, so i recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs, # 989900. This will give you two drawbars with different rise or drop options and a 2 inch ball as well as a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. This kit comes with a nice carrying bag as well as the pin and clip to install.

For your wiring needs, I recommend the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit, # 119250KIT. This will give you a 4 way connection at the rear for your trailer without splicing into your wiring system. A more economical option is the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C59236, but this kit will include splicing into your wires.

To upgrade this 4-way flat connector to a 7-way for use with brakes, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires, # ETBC7. This kit will use your 4 way flat connector and give you the wires, connectors, and circuit breakers to add the power, electric brake contoller, and reverse function to your trailer. I've attached some installation videos to assist in this application.

The last thing you need is a brake controller. For your vehicle, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will give you the same braking force at your trailer as you give your X3 at the brake pedal. This controller has a very nice LCD screen that makes understanding its function very easy. It installs under the dash of your vehicle to make it accessible to the driver.
