LED Trailer Lights Not Bright Enough Using Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness

Question:

I recently installed Curt # 55323 on my 2004 Dodge Dakota. I noticed that the lights on my trailer are extremely dim to the point you can not see them on. The trailer has all LED lights, could this cause an issue? When hooked to another vehicle everything works as it should.

I reached out to my tech contact at Curt to get their thoughts. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 55323, on your 2004 Dodge Dakota is utilizing a 10 amp system to draw from. Another vehicle connected to your trailer may be pulling more amps through the system which can allow a problem in even your trailer to be far less apparent.

It is most likely a poor ground that is to blame for your dim lights. It can be a poor ground on the vehicle side, like at your T-Connector, or it can be on the trailer side. I recommend checking all of your ground connections for corrosion, debris, and solid metal to metal contact. I'm pretty confident that a bad ground is the culprit and this should solve your issue, but if not, you would then need to go wire to wire for function issues using an incandescent circuit tester like # PTW2993 to isolate issues like wire shorting. Use a clean ground for the alligator clip and go through each function independently on your vehicle first and then with the trailer connected.
