Expert Reply:

The wire making the connections has a copper conductor, and the pins are made of brass, for strength and corrosion resistance, also because it readily conducts electricity. The blades on the vehicle side of the connection are meant to fit tightly against the pins in the plug which helps hold the connection together. The cover on the socket also helps hold the plug in place, as well.
