Testing Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118336 For Correct Functions on a 2005 Honda CR-V

Question:

I connected this up to my 2005 Honda CRV. In order to test the installtion out I purchased an LED test plug at a local auto parts store. When testing and watching the LED displays on my test plug the left and right turn indicators work. When I turn on the headlights the Light LED lights up. When I have the lights on and signal left or right the Light LED lights up but the left or right LED does not light up. Do I have a problem with the unit I installed? I have not check out the brake function but I would anticipate that both left and right indicators would light up on my test plug. and I am assuming that if I had my lights on and pressed on my brakes all 3 LEDs would light up? I hope Ive explained my situation clear enough. DoI have a problem in my wiring module? Thank you for your indulgence in this matter.

You could have a problem with the converter box in the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118336, but to be sure, I would test the connector with something other than a plug in style test light. A trailer or a circuit tester like the Quickee # 3808 would be better. Some times, the plug type testers can cause a malfunction. To eliminate it as the problem another testing method will need to be done.

With a trailer hooked up, you would simply run through the functions; left, right turn signal, brakes, and running lights, to make sure they are all working properly. If they are then everything should be fine. If testing with a circuit tester, you would need to test each pin while running through the functions. If, in either case, you find that there is a problem, you will need to test the converter.

What you will do is use the circuit tester to first test the wires going into the converter box. If they are all correct, you can move on to testing the wires coming out of the converter. If the functions are correct going in but incorrect coming out then there is something wrong with the converter and it will need to be replaced. If the functions are not correct going in then there is something amiss with the vehicle wiring that probably should be checked by a qualified mechanic or a local Honda dealer.

I have included a link below to the installation details for the wiring harness for reference and a link to a video demonstrating how to test a converter.
