Question:

I want to know if a shortened version could be used to mount a ball hitch system for a fifth wheel style trailer?

When installing a hitch on a travel or 5th trailer, the frame width of the trailer is an important factor in choosing a hitch. You will need to measure between the inside of the 5th wheel trailer's frame to determine which hitch will work for your application. You will also need to contact the manufacturer of your trailer to see if your trailer can have a hitch installed and if a hitch can be installed, what is the maximum tongue weight allowed for the rear of your 5th wheel trailer.

The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch # 41990 is really designed to be used on service body vehicles, like ambulances. This hitch was not designed to be installed on the back of travel or 5th wheel trailers.

For your application, I recommend the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch # 13703. The Curt hitch can be adjusted from a minimum of 22 inches to a maximum of 72 inches. This hitch will give you a larger range of lengths to mount and has mounting brackets are included. The Curt hitch is a Class III hitch rated at 350 lbs max tongue weight. For your 5th wheel trailer, 350 lbs for tongue weight will most likely be the max tongue weight you will be able to tow on your trailer. Again, you will need to get the max tongue weight recommendation from the trailer's manufacturer to make sure you will not overload the tongue weight capacity.

I linked a video on installing the Curt hitch for you to view.
