Recommendation for an Oil Filter Adapter for Installing an Oil Cooler on a 2006 Pontiac GTO

Question:

Will this fit a 2006 Pontiac GTO? Can you recommend a smaller in height oil filter that could work with this?

The low profile sandwich adapter, item # D25771, is 1 inch thick. If you know the thread pattern on your engine oil filter the 13/16-16 threads may work but a universal kit is what we normally recommend, so you have the correct adapter for your application. This kit is the Low-Profile Sandwich Adapter - Multiple Engine Filter Threads, item # D25783.

I would not recommend using a shorter oil filter with less capacity than the OEM oil filter.

It sounds like you want to install an oil cooler on your 2006 Pontiac GTO and that you have determined that there will not be enough room to install and remove the stock oil filter if a sandwich adapter is placed between the oil filter and the engine oil filter landing on the engine block.

If this is the case, you will need to install a Spin-On Adapter Kit and a remote oil filter along with an oil cooler. The Derale Tube-Fin Engine Oil Cooler Kit w/ Spin-On Adapter (Multiple Threads), item # D15551, would be the correct application in this situation. This oil cooler kit will allow you to relocate the oil filter landing to an accessible area. You would then be able to use any oil filter, as large or larger than your OEM filter, that has 3/4 - 16 threads. Using an oil filter with greater capacity would not be an issue. You will need to add a bit more oil when changing the oil and filter during routine maintenance.

If you just need the Spin On Adapter Kit, item # D15747, and the Remote Oil Filter Mount, item # D25709, we have those items available for you also.

The only oil filters we carry at this time are the aFe Direct-Fit Pro Guard oil filters, see link.
