Recommendation For Replacement 2000-Lb Trailer Axle

Question:

I am looking at replacing my trailer axle with either Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles - 72inch Long - 2,000 lbs or one similar to it. I cannot find any dimensions/information about what your standard spindle is. I need to know the length, diameter and any other information about it as possible. I am trying to figure out if my hubs will work on these spindles. If I need to purchase hubs for this axle, how much are they each? Thank you.

The best way to find an axle that will match your trailer is to measure the spring-center-to-spring-center distance and the hub-face-to-hub-face distance of the axle you have on your trailer currently. I have attached a drawing that shows where these dimensions are taken.

It may be easier to replace the axle with an axle that has the hubs already included. If you find you need a 72-inch axle and your wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern I recommend part # 20545I-ST-72-15. This comes with the axle, hubs, bearings, races, and seals.

If your wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern I recommend part # 20440I-ST-72. This comes with the axle, hubs, bearings, races, and seals also. Both of these axles are 2,000-lb axles. You want to make sure the axle you choose has the weight rating you need for your trailer. The hub-face-to-hub-face length of these two axles is 72-inches and the spring-center-to-spring-center length is 58-inches. The outside diameter of the axle tubing is 1-3/4 inches.

If you want to use the hubs you have you will need to know what bearings you have. You can normally find the bearing number stamped on the side of the bearing. If you cannot read the numbers you will need to use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 and measure the spindle where the bearings ride and the inside diameter of the hub. I have attached a photo that shows where you need to measure the spindle to find correct replacements and to make sure you can match your hub with a replacement axle.

As I said, I believe that you would be better off buying an axle with the hubs so you are sure everything is new and in great working condition.
