What is the Difference Between All the 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Brakes

10 x 2 1/4 drum brakes..so many options. Do they even matter?

When it comes to 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies there are a few things you need to consider before purchasing. The first you will need to know is if you have electric or hydraulic brakes on your trailer.
There is also a difference in the weight capacity of the axles the will fit. There are 3,500 lbs and 4,400 lbs axles ratings. However, the 3,500 lbs and electric brakes are the most common size.
After these two factors are determined, then the rest is a personal preferences.The etrailer/Axle Technology # AKEBRK-35R-SA is an electric brake assembly that is for the right hand side of a trailer. This brake assembly is also a self adjusting assembly that only need setup at time of installation.
Brake assembly part # AKEBRK-35R is the same electric brake assembly for the right side of the trailer, but is not a self-adjusting unit. These brake will need to be adjusted from time to time after installation.
The Dexter brake assemblies, # K23-479-00, are designed the same as the etrailer brake assemblies, however, the components on the Dexter assemblies are a little different. The brake magnets on the Dexter brakes are not as thick as the magnets on the etrailer/Axle Technology brake assemblies. The thicker brake magnets on the etrailer assemblies will have a longer wear life than the magnets on the Dexter brakes. Also, the etrailer shoe pads are manufactured in a different manner than Dexter's shoes. The etrailer/Axle Technology shoe pads are precision machine cut while Dexter uses a clipper to clip the pad off a long piece of material. The breaking of the Dexter pads cause the pads to be more susceptible to chipping, which helps wear out the brake pads quicker.
Hydraulic brakes are also an option for the 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies. Some of the hydraulic brake assemblies have marine applications. The assemblies, like # AKFBBRK-35R-D, have a Dacromet coating to add rust resistance and a free-backing design. The free-backing design will allow you to back your trailer up without engaging the trailer brakes.
