Wiring Kit Needed to Install Hopkins Smart Hitch Camera HM50002 in 1994 Ford F-150 Without 7-Way

Question:

Hi, I do not have the 7 way trailer connector on my vehicle. I have a four pin connector. What do I need to make this back up camera work? I purchased from e-trailer the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector awhile back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A backup camera like the Hopkins Smart Hitch # HM50002 when installed in a vehicle's 7-way wiring will use the reverse light signal to activate the camera. Your 4-pole wiring includes stop, turn and tail light signals but not a reverse light signal.

The Smart Hitch camera is intended to plug in at the back of a 7-way socket, where it will take in the reverse light signal for the camera but still let all signals pass through to reach the 7-way socket. For a 7-way kit for your truck you can use part # 20023. This includes the socket, wiring harness, mounting bracket and connectors.

If you don't need trailer brake or 12V power signals you'll only need to tap into the reverse light circuit at the taillight. This is the circuit that goes hot only when the truck is shifted into reverse and is carried on the center pin of the 7-way, as shown in the linked photo. The 4-pole harness's yellow, green and brown wires will connect to those on the 7-way color for color.
