do you know if it will fit on a 2009 ford escape and still allow the hatch to open?

The Yakima Skybox 18 part # Y07336 would fit the factory crossbars of your 2009 Ford Escape and if the distance from the center of the front crossbar back to the hatch seam is greater than 57 inches the rear hatch will open just fine.
The Yakima Skybox NX 16 # Y95AV will fit if the distance from the center of the front crossbar back to the hatch seam is greater than 47 inches.
