Recommended Platform-Style E-Bike Carrier For 2016 Mazda CX-5 With Class l Hitch

Question:

I just bought a new 2016 Mazda CX5 and had the dealer install a hitch at the time of purchase. Its rated to tow 2500 lbs. When we picked it up I was a little disappointed that it was 1 1/4inch receiver. Also, its a class 1. I began looking for a bike rack that could accommodate 2 electric bikes which weigh 61 lbs each. Finally I found the #TH903202 which seems to be able accommodate these bikes. I a little concerned as at one place in the ad it says Class 2 or 3. Under specs it says Class 1. One of the fellows at the bike shop cast doubt on any Class 1 with 11/4inch receivers rack being able to handle the load. Clarification would be appreciated.

The Thule EasyFold XT Bike Platform Rack, part # TH903202, is the only bike carrier I recommend that can fit in a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and is capable of handling your e-bikes. I verified the capacity of this bike rack and also that it will work with a Class l trailer hitch with my contact at Thule.

This carrier has a weight capacity of 65-lbs per bike and it weighs 45-lbs. The rack can be tilted with or without the bikes loaded to make it easy to load or unload. This carrier features the One-Key System that secures the bikes to the rack and the rack to the vehicle.

I also recommend checking with your dealership to make sure the trailer hitch you have on your CX-5 can handle the weight of the bikes added to the carrier weight.
