When or how does the black wire get hot? And the blue wire, does it only get hot if I have a brake controller in the truck? 2007 Chevy silverado HD duramax.

Expert Reply:
The black wire of a 7-way is typically the 12 volt power accessory circuit. This would be hot all the time but on some vehicles it may only come on when the key is in the on position.
The blue wire would only see power if a brake controller was putting power on the circuit.
