Should Weight Distribution be Used on a Truck Towing 8k Trailer with 10k Rated Hitch

Question:

I have a 1994 Ford 4x4 f-250 di diesel, standard cab, and upgraded to 1 ton springs on the rear axle. I am looking at hitches that specify that they are good for 500 lbs. tongue weight and 5000 lbs gross trailer weight but 1000 lbs. tongue weight and 10000 lbs gross trailer weight with weight distribution. If I want to tow a 8000 lb tandem axle trailer, would I need really need weight distribution if the hitch has rating of 10000 lbs and my trucks springs are able to handle the tongue weight? Wouldnt using weight distribution add more load to the hitch itself? Thanks for the help.

If the trailer you plan on towing weighs more than half of the weight of the tow vehicle we recommend the use of weight distribution. If your trailer weighs 8,000 lbs loaded you are going to want to use a weight distribution system.

The WD systems do put a different kind of pressure on the bottom of the trailer hitches they are used with, but it does not actually over-strain the vehicle/hitch.

For an 8k trailer the Straitline System part # RP66084 would be the one to use.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
