Brake Assembly and Breakaway System for Trailer with 4,000 lb Axles

Question:

Hi! After 30 years, its time to refresh the brakes on my boat trailer. It sees occasional use in fresh water only. Im out of my comfort zone selecting parts- help! My tandem axle trailer has 4040 lb axles and 12x2inch drums with a 6-5.5 bolt pattern. The drums are in great condition. The actuator is in poor condition and needs replacement. I much prefer electric brakes instead of surge, and an EOH system is out of budget. Heres what Im considering: 2 AKEBRK-7L-SA drum elec brakes, left 2 AKEBRK-7R-SA drum elec brakes, right 1 C52028 Curt Breakaway kit 1 DM13203-95 Demco coupler 1 Techonsha P3 controller 1 ETBC7 Vehicle wiring kit Does this look reasonable? Do you have suggestions that might work better without terribly breaking the bank? What am I forgetting? Im comfortable and experienced with marine wiring. Thanks !!

You are definitely on the right track. All of the parts you mentioned would work well together and would give a great braking solution for your trailer.

The assemblies part # AKEBRK-7L-SA and # AKEBRK-7R-SA will fit your trailer and will work great. The Curt breakaway system part # C52028 is a great system to use, the Demco coupler part # DM13203-95 will provide you with a 2-5/16 inch ball coupler.

And then the P3 part # 90195 and # ETBC7 will work great for installing a brake controller as long as your vehicle currently has a 4-way installed.

I attached a help article on adding electric brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.
