Does Brake Controller Illumination Circuit Have Anything to Do with Trailer Running Lights

Question:

I installed a Hopkins Agility controller on my 2009 Nissan Titan, and followed the instructions, using my factory adapter plug. The brake controller works, but the taillights are out. There are 4 wires on the controller, but there are 5 wires on the factory adapter. The 5th is labeled illumination, and I was wondering where it needs to be connected. I assume that is the taillights. Thanks.

The illumination circuit of brake controller wiring on a vehicle is for the third brake light. In your case it is not used and is not the reason your taillights stopped working. That circuit does not need to be ran anywhere. Normally it's used for wiring a third brake light of a camper shell.

The taillight wiring for the trailer is unrelated to the brake controller actually. Most likely you just have a dirty trailer wiring connector and cleaning it will get the circuit to be active again. But if that doesn't do the trick you can also check the fuse box of the vehicle for any towing related fuses and fix as needed.

I also attached a couple help articles for you to check out as well.
