Troubleshooting Brake Controller in 1996 Chevy Truck that Stopped working with Brakes

Question:

I have a 1996 chevy silverado with the Z71 package and trailer towing package. My problem is that I have no trailer brakes when I push the brake pedal, but work when I use the controler, its a hayes model, but at the same time I lost the 4 way flashers on the truck. I have replaced the Flasher unit I got from auto zone. Is it connected ? or two seprate problems? all other lights work as they should on both truck and trailer

Sounds like you have a blown third brake light fuse on your truck. This is a common problem for GM trucks. Easy way to check this is to check to see if your third brake light on the truck cab is still working. If not the problem is the fuse and replacing it will fix the problem.

If the light still works it's most likely the red wire of the controller just not being securely attached to circuit that only sees 12 volts when the brakes are applied.
