Trailer Wiring/Brake Controller Recommendation for 2014 Dodge Durango SXT
Question:
Bought used 2014 Durango SEXY with after-market Class III hitch and 4 pin wiring. Wiring seems to not be working, not sure why, so I am looking to replace completely. Cannot decide to just stay with 4 pin or go for broke and wire up vehicle for brake controller. I do not intend to haul much that would require trailer brakes but am thinking ahead to be prepared just in case. 1 what parts do I need for either option? only 4 pin OR 4/7 with controller 2 I am not really an auto/electrical person but I can accomplish basic things. Doing this wiring myself has me a little scared especially since I dont have access to a vehicle lift to make running wires easier. Any clear instructions/videos specific to my vehicle? 3 Watched the video for the 2013 Durango...why in the world would you disconnect the parking brake to install the controller? I am very confused. HELP!

For trailer wiring for your 2014 Dodge Durango you are going to want to start with at least just a 4-way. For that you would want the Tekonsha kit part # 118617 which is a confirmed fit. We have the best luck with this brand of wiring. I attached an install video for more info as well.
If you wanted to just install a 7-way without a brake controller for now all you would need is the part # 37185. This will convert the 4-way to a 7-way and will allow the turn signals of the trailer wiring to be active. Or if you wanted to go ahead and install a brake controller the # ETBC7 would be the kit you need.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
I attached an install video that shows installing the ETBC7 on a similar Durango as yours. I couldn't find a video that shows disconnecting the parking brake so I am not sure what you are referring to in that regard either.
