Can the End of a Ball Mount Be Trimmed Down to Fit in a Trailer Hitch on a 1999 GMC Yukon
Question:
Hi there, I have a ball mount to install in my 99 GMC Yukon with tow kit... Unfortunately, the shank bottoms out in the receiver. I am probably 1/2inch or 3/4inch shy of being able to the pin. Is this a typical problem? Can I just trim off the back of the shank with my metal-cutting band saw? I know you may not be able to actually condone the modification of such devices for safety and liability reasons... but Its several inches behind the pin hole, so I cant think of why it has to be so long or what could possibly come of trimming the end. Thanks

Part of what givesa ball mount its capacity is the amount of material inside of the receiver. By trimming it down it makes the capacity unknown and could compromise the structural integrity of the ball mount. Also, if it is a solid steel shank, trimming it is no small task!
The best option is a new ball mount that is a better fit. I recommend B&W ball mount # BWBMHD30010. It has the same rise and drop spec, same weight rating (though the tongue weight capacity is limited to 1,600 pounds on this ball mount), and the end of the shank is closer to the pin hole so it will fit. Its also made in the USA!
There is another one that is a bit longer, # BWBMHD30011, but has the same ratings as the shorter one.
