2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab Brake Controller and Install Harness Recommendation

Question:

Hello I was told that even though I could have a third party brake controller installed on my truck I would have to go to a Dodge dealer to have something reset or set. If so what is this and do I really have to do this? The dealer here wants over $300 CDN for a controller plus labor and the parts rep. said he didnt think the truck would need the service reset. So being a newbie at trailer camping I am a little confused. The only reason to get a brake controller would be to save life on the truck brakes. Plus the travel trailer is under 3000 lbs Jayco RB195 Should also mention that the truck has the 7 and 4 connectors and was bought as a used truck. I have the connectors under the dash: one grey with orange connection points and the other just plain grey. Any help very much appreciated.

I would be more than happy to help you pick out a brake controller solution. First thing you should know is that you do NOT have to go to a dealer to have anything reprogrammed or reset to install an aftermarket controller. Your truck is setup for the install of one and basically just needs it to be plugged in.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

To install this controller all you need is the correct install harness, part # 3021-P.

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.
