How Do The Hitch Covers Install On A 2007 Ford Explorer SportsTrac With A 1-1/4 Inch Hitch

Question:

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer Sports Trak LTD. It has a 1.25 inch hitch receptor, but it has a lip at the end of it so std. 2 inch Hitch plugs do not fit around the outside. Do you have any hitch plugs that may slide inside the receptor tube on the hitch? What are my options?

Most of the hitch plugs and hitch covers are designed that the plug or the shank on the hitch cover will slide into the inside of the hitch receiver. The lip on the end of the hitch should not interfere with installing the correct 1-1/4 inch size hitch cover on your 2007 Ford Explorer.

The rubber hitch plugs, like the Draw-Tite Rubber 1-1/4 Inch Tube Cover, # 2211, will just push into the opening and does not require a pin to hold it in place.

The hitch covers that use a shank like the Pilot Ford - Brake and Tail Light Trailer Hitch Cover, # CR-007F, will insert into the hitch opening and be held in place by a pin and clip, but it is made for 2" hitches. If you want to use this hitch cover with your 1-1/4" hitch opening, you could use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 1-1/4" (Class II) to 2" - 6" Long # C45785. This would also extend the cover out 6 inches from the hitch pin hole.
I would also recommend a hitch lock like the 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # e98879, in place of the pin and clip attaching to your vehicle to keep someone taking your adapter and the 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # e98880 to keep somebody from removing your hitch cover from your vehicle. The locks are optional of course.

If the hitch cover is lighted it would just plug into your 4-way trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle.

I do have many styles of hitch covers available that will fit your 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver. When looking at the hitch covers you will want to look at the covers that will fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch or ones that will fit both a 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitch.

I am sending a link to Ford hitch covers that will fit your hitch and a video link of a lighted hitch cover being installed on a vehicle.
