Transmission Cooler for 2016 Honda Pilot

re: 2016 Honda Pilot Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class III - Efficient #D13503 I have a new 2016 Honda Pilot and a new Salem Cruise Lite 21, 3,750 lb travel trailer. The pilot is stated to be able to tow 5,000lbs when configured. I had installed a Honda specified add-on transmission cooler - it is a dinky little thing. On recent trip trailer was not over-weight even when stocked, the transmission over-temp warning came on several times when cruising the interstate at around 60-65mph. I am sure the D13503 cooler provides much more cooling capacity than the little Honda specified product. Is this one truly compatible with Hondas technology? Could it cause transmission to run too cool? How is cooling capacity measured and/or indicated on products? Any Feedback on the new Honda Pilot installations and use? Any easier way to install than removing the entire front end? Thanks.

It is pretty common for aftermarket products such as transmission coolers to deliver performance that is superior to that of OEM components. Transmission coolers vary in their efficiency/cooling power and are given Class Ratings to indicate their effectiveness. Small is okay but bigger is definitely better when it comes to coolers.

For example, a small cooler like the Derale # D13611 (about 11 x 4-inches) carries a Class I rating while the much larger # D13503 (11 x 8-3/4-inches) is rated as a Class III cooler. Its greater surface area means more air will come into contact with it and more air contact means more cooling. Transmission fluid cannot be over-cooled and the Derale D13503 is fully compatible with your Pilot's transmission system.

You could replace the existing cooler with a larger one, or even add another unit downstream of it to further cool your fluid. We also offer fan-powered coolers like the Derale # D15950 Atomic-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit. This remote cooler can be positioned just about anywhere since it does not rely on passive air flow to cool. Its built-in 12V fan means it will cool all the time, even when you are standing still or slowly climbing a steep hill. Powered coolers offer this distinct advantage over passive types.
