Trailer Hitch Clearance on 2016 Mazda CX-5 for Kuat Sherpa Bike Rack
Question:
Hello, I have a kuat Sherpa that I would like to put on a 2016 mazda cx5. I plan on using the 75217 Draw-Tite Class 3 Trailer Hitch. When the kuat Sherpa is in the folded up position, will I still be able to open the trunk without having to fold down the bike rack?

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138 is a great choice for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. When we had the opportunity to install this hitch on a similar 2016 CX-5, we found that the clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest part of the bumper measures about 3 inches.
If you have the newer Kuat Sherpa 2.0, such as # SH22G, the hitch and rack will work well together. This rack will sit 9 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole when folded up, so the clearance would not be an issue.
I cannot guarantee that any of the trailer hitches available for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 will allow you to open the rear hatch while the bike rack is in the upright/stored position. I've attached a photo showing the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 # SH22G in the upright position on a similar SUV to give you an idea of what the rack will look like in relation to the vehicle. This clearance is not something we or the manufacturers test for.
