How the Locking Mechanism on the Tow Ready Interchangeable Hitch Ball, # 63802, Works

Question:

Is the locking mechanism pushing down on the center rod after the ball is on? If so, what prevents the weight of the tow bar from releasing it?

To operate the mechanism that locks the ball in to place, you push the slotted locking button down with a screwdriver or coin and turn it clockwise. To remove the ball you reverse these directions.

The slotted locking button is actually recessed far enough that it will not come into contact with the hitch coupler if it was on a trailer that was hitched up, thus would not cause it to release while towing.

If, for some unforeseen reason, the locking mechanism was somehow released while a trailer was hitched to it, the button has to raise so far up to actually disengage the locking mechanism and release the ball that the coupler being mounted onto the ball would make it impossible for it to actually release and cause your trailer to become unhitched while towing.
