How to Block Entry of Water Into 2011 Volkswagen Golf Equipped with SportRack SR1010

Question:

I purchased the sport rack sr1010 for my 2011 VW golf 4-door. I have followed the fit guide,I have called Thule for help as well. But..both the front and rear racks are letting water in from the right side only at the site of the clamp. What can I do to fix this? What do you recommend?

Expert Reply:

Semi-custom roof racks like the SportRack # SR1010 are designed to be cost-effective and to fit reasonably well on lots of different vehicles so in some instances the fit may not be quite as good as with a custom rack meant just for your particular car. But we can help you with your leakage issue.

I suggest you apply some weather-stripping tape like # WS1412 or # WS1434 to the area where you're finding moisture entering the car. This self-adhesive type of foam tape is springy and should work well to close up the point where water is entering the car. You can add the tape layer by layer until you have closed up the gap. If the tape should become compressed after a while, it is simple enough to remove the old tape and apply new.
