On your 1996 GMC 2500 the brake stoplight switch is very hard to access in this model year, but the circuit can be accessed at a different point. Try looking at the electrical center down by your left foot. Look for a a position labeled NAT, which will include 2 male spade connectors. Try a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, on the spade on the right, and see if it goes hot when the brake pedal is pressed. Although this can vary by model, if the spade is hot with the pedal pressed, you can connect the red brake wire there.
If this is not the case with your model, you will have to access the circuit in the main wiring harness under the steering column and above the brake pedal. The wire you are looking for is white, and when tested will only go hot when the brake is pressed. If you see a smaller bundle of wires wrapped in yellow tape, avoid them and keep looking.
I do not have a wiring diagram available for your 1996 GMC 2500.
I am sending a video link of a brake controller being installed on a 1993 Chevy Suburban. At the 7:30 mark of the video it will show connecting the brake controller to the hot brake wire. The vehicle is similar to your application.
