Recommended RV-Rated Hitch Bike Racks for 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
S64698 vs 64686 vs S44FR- Issues are a step through bike on the back of a 33foot fifth wheel. Your site has been so helpful in figuring out what bike rack we need and weve narrowed it down to three. Originally looked at the Dispatch for our bikes but Im concerned about my new Specialized Ariel step through frame, which is 21 1/2inch from ground to where the top tube of the frame meets the seat post. Because it would be attached closer to the center of the bike, Im worried about its stability behind the 5th wheel. Then I found the Semi 2 and 4, with attachment to the wheels rather than the frame. Leaning towards the Semi 4, because weve noticed in videos that the bike frames that fit both 1 1/4 and 2inch receivers seem to bounce around more than those made specifically for the 2inch hitch. Can I verify with you which you think would work best behind our fifth wheel? Would love feedback asap so we can get camping AND biking!! Thanks.

You will want to select an RV-rated hitch bike carrier for use on the back of your 5th wheel trailer. Standard bike racks made for use on cars and SUVs are not suitable for use on a trailer due to the additional stresses found at the rear of such vehicles. The extra stress results from the greater distance between the rear axle and the hitch. This extra distance translates into more leverage on the rack, and a regular rack made for cars could be destroyed by the forces at the back of a trailer.
The Swagman Semi racks are not RV-rated.
The linked page will show you all RV-rated bike racks that will fit into a 2-inch RV hitch. These include 2-bike platform racks like the Swagman Dispatch # S44FR and hanging style racks like the non-folding Swagman Original 3 # S64152-2. I own this rack and while it does not offer some of the fancier features of other products, I can say after a year of use that it is a very sturdy, solid product that I would buy again if I had it to do over again. Both are only fits for the 2-inch hitch size.
