How To Adjust The Ball Mount Angle On A Weight Distribution System

Question:

You say, if the measurements did not come out right we would have to remove or add washers. I do not like trial and error. If the wheel well measurements are not correct + or - which measurement would require addition removal of washers? Thank you

The pin and washer system to adjust the ball mount angle of the head is an old system that is not used much anymore. The only weight distribution systems we have that still use that system are the Curt weight distribution systems. The pin and washer system is a very difficult system to adjust.

When you put more washers on the pin that would increase the angle of the head towards the trailer which would raise the rear measurement on the tow vehicle. If you put less washers on the pin that would decrease the angle of the head towards the trailer which would lower the rear measurement on the tow vehicle.

The new system that is used to adjust the ball mount angle is the serrated washer system. The serrated washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning. Most of the Reese, Draw-Tite and Pro Series weight distribution systems use the serrated washer system.

I am sending a video link to troubleshooting a weight distribution system which will show you how the adjustments are made on a weight distribution system with the newer serrated washer system. Also, I am sending a link to the instructions of the Reese Weight Distribution, # RP66074, that describes how to adjust the serrated washers.

Unfortunately the video that Jeff mentioned is no longer available. I did link the full install manual below. The serrated washers on the Strait-Line System actually allows for pretty easy head adjustments. You'll just add a serrated washer to either side of the head and its teeth will line up to grooves on the head itself, letting you loosen and re-tighten once the right angle is set.
