Is There A Trailer Mounted Electronic Brake Controller So I Can Tow Trailer With Different Vehicles

Question:

I have a two axle trailer. Is there a brake controller that is trailer mounted not tow vehicle mounted, so different vehicles can tow the same trailer? Thanks!

Yes, for a trailer mounted brake controller we have the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller - Proportional - Trailer Mounted, part # TK27FR. The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller mounts to your trailer and is perfect for towing your trailer with different vehicles.

To use part # TK27FR, or any brake controller on your towing vehicles you will need a 7-way connector at the rear of your vehicle. If you do not have a 7-way connector you will need to install part # ETBC7.

If your tow vehicles already have a 7-way or factory 7-way installed you will simply install part # TK27FR to your trailer and plug the included RF Remote into the cigarette lighter or 12 volt power supply inside the vehicle. Part # TK27FR requires a constant 12 volt power supply at the 7-way trailer connector to be operated.

To install part # ETBC7, you will first install the mounting bracket of part # ETBC7, then mount the 7-way connector into the bracket. After mounting the 7-way connector, plug the 4-pole plug into the factory 4-way of your vehicle. The white wire is the ground, you will need to run that to the frame of the vehicle. The black wire is the power wire, you will need to connect another piece of wire and run it to the front of the vehicle, connecting it to a 40 amp fuse and then to the positive battery terminal. You can use the white wire from inside the doubled gray wire to run the black wire to the front of the vehicle. The extra wires of part # ETBC7 should be taped up and zip tied out of the way.

I have linked instructions of part # TK27FR and an FAQ on brake controllers below.
