How to Bypass Factory Integrated Brake Controller on a 2011 Ram 3500

Question:

Hello, I have a 2011 ram with the integrated brake controller. Not Reall happy with it. Was thinking of upgrading to the P3 Tekonsha. Is this just a matter of remove the plug from the factory module and using the wire adapter kit from etrailer and plug into the new P3. Or do I have to go to the dealer and have them turn off something. Or is there something I can do? Or just do it dont worry about it? Does the integrated controller work together with my transmission and exhaust brake. Yes it is a diesel dually. Am I stuck with what I Have??? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks,

You can bypass the factory brake controller on a 2011 Dodge Ram but there are a few things to do first. I have explained it below and also included a link to an FAQ that will help.

To install an aftermarket brake controller on a 2011 Dodge Ram that has the factory integrated controller you will have to disconnect the ITBM (Integrated Trailer Brake Module). Doing so will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific brake control harness such as the Tekonsha # 3021-P, to install the aftermarket brake control.

To disconnect the ITBM, you or the dealer will need to contact the Business Center to remove the sales code (XHC). The TIPM will need to be reconfigured. Once the sales code has been disabled you can disconnect the ITBM electrical connector, under the dash, without getting the warning lamp. Basically the computer needs to be told that the truck does not have a brake controller so you can unplug it without getting that warning light.

Then to install an aftermarket brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P3, # 90195. This is a reliable controller that is easy to set up and use and is compatible with electric and electric over hydraulic braking systems. Use wiring harness # 3021-P. This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicles built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.
