What Is Needed To Replace Factory Brake Controller On 2010 Dodge 3500 With Tekonsha Brake Controller

Question:

I have a 2010 Dodge 3500 dually but it does not have enough brake for heavy loads, What a joke right? I am starting to find this is not a good option to pay for. I want to put an aftermarket but can we wire around it?

For the 2010 Dodge 3500 Dually with a factory 7-way trailer connector you would need the Tekonsha Brake Control Adapter, # 3021-P, to hook up a Tekonsha brake controller to the factory brake controller port and bypass the factory brake controller.

The Tekonsha Brake Control Adapter, # 3020-P, you have referenced will only fit up to 2009 Dodge 3500 vehicles. It will not work on your 2010 vehicle.

On your 2010 Dodge 3500 there will be 2 different size gray plugs behind your factory brake controller. You will choose the plug that will match up to the plug on one end of the Tekonsha Brake Control Adapter, # 3021-P. The other end of the # 3021-P adapter will plug into the back of a Tekonsha brake controller.

I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885. The Prodigy 2 brake controller is our best selling model. It can be mounted in a 360 degree vertical range and will level itself automatically. It is a proportional brake controller which means that the brakes are applied to the trailer at the same time and same strength as the brakes on your truck.

I am sending a link to the instructions on the Prodigy P2 brake controller.

The vehicle will also need the computer flashed so it will keep from searching for the connection to the OEM brake controller in the future, eliminating any fault codes. This will usually have to be done at the Dodge Dealer.

You can try unhooking the vehicle battery for 5 minutes to see if that might flash the computer, but that does not always work. Once the computer is flashed you will be ready to go.
