Can a Platform Bike Rack Be Used on the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk
Question:
My question is, can a bike rack like the Saris Freedom 2 Platform rack work with the CC-275 mount. I have seen many pictures through the question and answer section, but everyone has a rack that the bike hangs from. Im interested in how this works with a platform bike rack.

You can use a platform-style bike rack like the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B with the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk # CC-275 as long as the platform bike rack will fit in the 2 inch receiver on the Bike Bunk. Another thing to keep in mind is the weight capacity of the Bike Bunk. Including the weight of the carrier, the Bike Bunk # CC-275 has a weight capacity of 100 pounds. I confirmed with my technical contact at Stromberg Carlson that a platform rack can be used on the Bike Bunk.
Since the Freedom # SA4412B is compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitch receivers, it will fit well in the 2 inch receiver of the Bike Bunk.
The weight of the Freedom is a little less than 25 pounds. This means that the combined weight of the 2 bikes on the rack will need to be less than 75 pounds. In this instance, the Freedom bike rack will actually be the limiting factor, since its weight capacity is 35 pounds per bike.
I think the reason you've seen more photos of hanging style bike racks being used on the Bike Bunk is because they are a more traditional style rack that many people have. Often, platform racks are heavier, though not so much in the case of the Saris Freedom, and people typically want to use the lightest rack possible on the Bike Bunk. Based on the weight, weight capacity, and the fact that this rack will fit a 2 inch hitch, I think the Saris Freedom # SA4412B will work well for you.
It is also important to remember that using a bike rack on the Bike Bunk may have an effect on your turning radius depending on your towing set up. I have attached review videos of the Bike Bunk and Freedom bike rack for you.
