What Would Cause Outside Trailer Tire Wear and Sway Over 60 MPH

Question:

I have a 2004 Sunnybrook 27FKS, the rear axle tires are wearing on the outside edges. I have Carlisle Dura Trail RH tires on the trailer. The tire pressure is at the manufactured amount. I know suspension components could be part of the problem. But, could it also cause the trailer to sway? Any thing over 60mph and its really hard to keep the trailer under control. I have 2 sway controls on the hitch set up and I still have problems. Also how do I confirm the proper weight distribution when we load the trailer? Thanks for all the help

Helpful Expert Reply:

Excessive tire wear and sway like you described typically describes worn out suspension components that are allowing too much movement.

Proper trailer loading to prevent sway requires that your trailer have between 10 and 15 percent of the total weight of the trailer as tongue weight.

I attached a help article that details how to determine tongue weight as well.

You need to get under you trailer and find out where the worn out component is and fix as needed. A better solution may be to take to the trailer to a shop local to you and have them go over the entire setup.
