Can a Different Trailer Hitch be Installed on 2012 Subaru Outback without Removing Factory Hitch

Question:

I currently have a dealer installed Class I hitch installed on my outback... it comes out of the back bumper and does not hand down below. . Can I install a heavier hitch without un-installing this factory hitch?

The factory trailer hitch on your 2012 Subaru Outback would still be in the way of an aftermarket hitch. It would have to come off of the vehicle in order to install a different hitch. Sometimes the factory hitches are welded on. If that is the case with your hitch then you will not be able to remove it.

But if it bolts on you can remove it. Then you can install Draw-Tite Class III trailer hitch # 75673. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

And if you need a trailer wiring harness you can use # 118467 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked a video showing how the wiring installs as well.
