Recommended Trailer Hitch And 4-Bike Swinging Carrier For 2016 Toyota RAV4
Question:
Im looking for a 4 bike hitch rack for a 2016 rav 4. Im concerned because I have a very steep driveway and Im looking for a rack that minimally sticks out of the back so that it doesnt scrape when climbing the driveway. I initially wanted a rack that swings but it looks like they may be longer and stick out more than tilting or non tilt/swing racks. Can you please give me a recommendation on this, also I do not yet have a hitch and I know this can be a factor as well.

The first thing you will need is a trailer hitch on your 2016 RAV4. I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch, part # e98864. This is a Class lll trailer hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for this trailer hitch on a 2016 RAV4. As you can see in the video the distance from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-1/2-inches.
With the steep driveway I understand the concern you have. I recommend the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack, part # Y02465. I have attached a link to a product review video you can check out. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the base of the carrier is 9-inches. As you can see in the attached photo the bike carrier is above the top of the receiver tube. This should give you more room to clear your driveway.
Also, when dealing with steep changes in pavement like your driveway, pull in at a sharper angle to reduce the chance of scraping anything you have mounted in the hitch.
If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
