In order to set up the Pilot Brake controller part # 80550 you need to basically run it through the setup process that is outlined in the attached installation instructions.
What you will end up doing is find an empty parking lot and once up to a slower cruising speed grab the manual override lever fully. What you want is to adjust the gain wheel of the controller so that it almost wants to lock the tires up but does not quite do so. This will ensure that you get maximum braking power.
It's typically best to try increasing the power till the tires to lock up and then back the power off slightly till they stop.
You would need to run through this process every time you tow a trailer with a different weight to ensure the controller is set up properly.
