Lightweight Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback
Question:
Recommendation please - Class 1 1 1/4inch CURT hitch just installed on my 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback. Looking for a 2 bike platform bike carrier. Weight of carrier is a concern since Ill probably be taking it off frequently - unless it can fold up and in towards car. Also want to be able to access the hatch area w/ carrier on the car. Dont want to spend over $300. Have seen conflicting carrier weight values online. Going blind reading reviews - please spare my eyesight w/ a couple recommendations THANKS!

This may be out of your price range, but the best platform bike rack I could recommend that would fit the criteria you listed is the Saris SuperClamp EX 2 part # SA4025F. This is a lightweight rack that comes in a 35 lbs. Most platform bike racks weigh significantly more that this so if weight if your main concern this will be the best option. It also only touches the bikes at the tires which means no painted surfaces or cables would get touched. I attached a review video for you to check out.
Another semi-lightweight bike rack is the Swagman XTC2 part # S64670 which weighs right at the same as the Superclamp. It grabs the bikes at the frames instead. I attached a review video for this as well.
Now both racks will give you some access to the rear hatch of the 3, but it may not be full access. That will depend largely on the width of your handlebars.
Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached a review video for you to check for the strap as well.
