Rightline RL100S20 Roof Mounted Cargo Bag for 2013 Subaru Forester

Question:

My Forester came without roof rails. How secure are your cargo bags for naked roofs? I understand that the straps can go across the car through the inside, but how secure are they from preventing forward/backward motion since there arent front-to-back straps also?

If correctly installed, the through-the-car installation of the RL100S20 would be secure enough for occasional use, but some front to back movement is still possible. However this method of installation can have other drawbacks. Running the securing straps through the vehicle would compromise the head room and can allow water to leak inside if you're caught in a rainstorm. The nylon straps can also wick water into the vehicle.

For the safest, most secure fit and maximum passenger comfort, I'd recommend going with an inexpensive roof rack. Rhino Rack offers a reasonably priced roof rack that would consist of the following parts:

Rhino Rack 2500 Series Crossbar, part # RRVA126B-2
Leg Kit, part # RRRLKVA
Vehicle specific clamp kit, part # DK186

The roof rack can be used for all kinds of other uses, like ski racks, canoe or kayak carriers, bike racks, baskets and roof boxes. I'll link you to some helpful FAQ articles about vehicle roof storage solutions.
