If your 2006 Toyota Tacoma came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector then it is pre-wired for a brake controller. I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it's easy to set up and use and it is reliable. You will also need wiring harness # 3040-P to plug the controller into the truck. I have linked a video showing an example installation using this harness.

If the truck only has a 4-Way then you will need installation kit # ETBC7, instead of 3040-P, and the brake controller will have to be hardwired in.

And if the truck does not have any trailer connector you will first need to install a 4-Way using # 118496 and then use # ETBC7 to install the controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
