Components Needed To Flat-Tow 1993 Mazda Miata Behind Motorhome

Question:

Can I flat tow a 1993 Mazda Miata convertible behind my 33foot Class A Motor home? If I purchase the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar BX7380 do you have base plates to fit the 93 Miata and if so the cost? Do I need an additional braking system? What light kit would you recommend?

You sure can flat-tow your 1993 Miata behind your motorhome. Since we only offer Roadmaster base plates for your vehicle you have a couple options. I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 711-4.

If you decide you want to go with the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part # BX7380, you will need the RoadMaster Base Plate to Blue Ox Tow Bars Adapter, part # RM-033. Then you will need the Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnect Kit, part # RM-201.

If you decide this is too many components you can use a Roadmaster Falcon All-Terrain tow bar like part # RM-522. This eliminates the need for the adapter or the Quick Disconnect.

When you are flat-towing a vehicle, there are five things needed. You need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle, and most states now require supplemental braking.

We have the base plates and tow bars covered so the next item is the safety cables. They are included with the Alpha tow bar, but if you decide on the Roadmaster system I recommend pare # RM-643.

Since your Miata has separate lighting I recommend using the Roadmaster 6-Diode Wiring Kit, part # 154-792-118158.

For an easy to use option for lighting you can use magnetic tow lights like part # TLL21RK. Both of these kits have a 4-way flat connector. If you have a different style connector on your motorhome you can check out the attached link for the adapters we offer.

For a supplemental brake system I recommend the Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System, part # BLU37TR. This is a proportional brake system that applies the brakes in your Miata with the same intensity as the brakes in the motorhome.

You will want to check your owner's manual or with your dealership to see if there are any restrictions you need to follow when flat-towing your Miata.
