Trailer Tire Load Ranges and Weight Capacities for Single-Axle Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a travel trailer with 205/75R15 tires on a single axle. The load range is listed at range c which according to your info is 1820 lbs. The Gross Vehicle weight just over 5000 lbs. Did the manufacture get it wrong? I wanted to order a spare but you dont have any with a higher load range than C.

Expert Reply:

The specific weight capacity of any given load range tire could vary slightly among tire sizes, radials versus bias ply and by tire brand. As it happens all load range C (LRC) tires that we offer in your particular ST205/75R15 size DO have a rating of 1820-lbs. The LRD tire we offer from Kenda, part # AM10245, has a 2150-lb capacity at its rated inflation pressure of 65-psi. This is the highest-rated trailer tire we offer in your size.

The tires on your trailer should be rated high enough to handle the full rated gross weight of your trailer. If your OEM tires supplied by the trailer manufacturer do not have the capacity to handle the trailer's gross weight then you might want to contact the manufacturer with the trailer's VIN, or speak to the dealer where you bought it to find out why it was supplied with tires rated lower than the trailer's gross weight.

Trailer tires should always be fully inflated to the rated cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire.
