5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Install Kit Recommendations for a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 Short Bed
Question:
I have not bought a fifth wheel yet. I want to install a slider hitch in my 2013 GMC sierra 250hd before I get one. What is the average height I should look for. Looks like the custom base rail kit RP56001-53 is the easiest to install. Not sure what hitch to buy.

First, you are right about installation kit # RP56001-53 being the easiest custom kit to install on your 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 short bed. Because of that I highly recommend it. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.
As far as height goes for a hitch, most all 5th wheel hitches are height adjustable but on many slider hitches you cannot use the lowest setting because it would interfere with the sliding mechanism. Ideally you will want 5 or 6 inches from the tops of the bed sides to the bottom of the trailer overhang.
But you can compensate for height issues by not only adjusting the hitch height but also most 5th wheel trailer pin boxes can be adjusted up and down. Based on this I recommend going with the slider that has the most travel available; the Demco HiJacker # DM8550034. This hitch is rated for 18K, has 14 inches of travel, slides automatically without you having to do anything, and it fits in industry standard above the bed rails. It is height adjustable at 15-1/4", 16-1/2", and 18". I have included a link to a video review of this hitch for you.
